Kuma Hito (Bear People)
By: Cameron “Red Devil” Dumont
Kuma Hitos are reserved socially but also naturally curious. They tend to live in small tribes in woodland areas where they forage & hunt for survival. Their culture admires bravery and strength but emphasizes self-restraint, choosing to focus on harnessing their innate ferocity into martial training rather than giving into their feral tempers. However, they still have a tendency to go into ferocious flurries in violent confrontations. While biologically capable of hibernating they tend not to, instead preferring to set aside food for the winter. They were created by Shunk-Wugga, the animal companion of a powerful Dwarven druid who casted awaken on him shortly before his death. Shunk-Wugga desiring kin and a better life for his fellow bears, dedicated many years of his life to shamanism, until he was able to awaken more bears. His descendants now form the race of Kuma Hito. After several generations and through self-imposed selective breeding, the Kuma Hito have become adapted to bipedal movement and have finesse with their fore paws not unlike a human’s hand coordination. During this process they have become less proficient with their mouths as weapons. Kuma Hito must be birthed from other Kuma Hitos and can’t be created from awakening a bear.
Kuma Hito admire the culture of Dwarves and base some of their traditions and values on Dwarven ones. Most Kuma Hito wish to be accepted as equal sentient beings when compared to the less bestial races and although they become frustrated when treated as animals they try to change people’s perspectives of them.
Kuma Hitos are a rare sight, their entire race is only about six generations past from their progenitor Shunk-Wugga. Kuma Hitos are detested by Orcs who view them as weak hearted and cowardly for shunning their ferocious tendencies Kuma Hitos also detest Orcs partly because of the Orc’s low opinion of them and partly due to their admiration for Dwarven ideals. Attitudes towards Kuma Hitos from other races tend to differ by region.
The most common of the Kuma Hitos are the Horribili and the Kermodei, being descendants of grizzly bears and black bears respectively. Other types of Kuma Hitos, while exceedingly rare, are not unheard of.
