Monstrous Menagerie: Sky Shark (CR 15)

Sky Shark

This horrifying creature appears to be a mix between a shark, a bat, an eagle, and a scorpion. It sports a maw covered in razor sharp fangs, two great wings, four clawed legs and its tail ends in a vicious pincer.

Blood Scent (EX): this ability functions like the keen scent universal monster ability. With the exception, that the sky shark can detect blood in the air if it’s upwind, from up to a mile away, instead of detecting blood underwater.

Blood Torrent (EX): once per day a sky shark can regurgitate a torrent of blood that it stores in one of its multiple stomachs. Those caught in its blood torrent must succeed at a DC 24 fortitude save or become nauseated until they can clean themselves off completely with water (spending a turn completely submerged under water or being doused with at least four gallons of water is enough to remove the nauseated condition). Those that succeed on their save instead become sickened until they can wash themselves off with water as well. This ability is constitution based.

Powerful Bite (EX): a sky shark applies twice its Strength modifier to bite damage.

Environment tropical, hill and plain

None know for sure the origins of these bizarre creatures. Although most agree that it was through the meddling or arcane spellcasters that these creatures exist.

Sky sharks are the apex predators of almost any area where they reside; usually spelling dread for locals if there is a nest near since sky sharks love to eat horses and other large farm animals.

Sky sharks are highly territorial creatures, only allowing to live in their domain those they will eat, or those that will provide food for them. They will not hesitate to attack their own species if they intrude. When sky sharks mate, they mate for life, and in a lifetime a female may lay up to twenty eggs, which they guards jealously and viciously, caring little for their own self-preservation if they can ensure the safety of their offspring.

Records of villages worshiping sky sharks as vengeful spirits or gods exists; these villages give them offerings of food regularly, which will almost always guarantee that the sky shark will serve as a sort of protector of the village.

Sometimes an unmated sky shark will enter another’s realm and challenge it to combat; if the challenger wins he will take the dead sky sharks mate as his own. Larger sky sharks are rare but not unheard of, these creatures have been known to hunt and eat young dragons.

A typical adult sky shark is 18 feet long, having a wingspan of almost twice that, and weighs approximately 2,500 pounds.
