New Base Class: Umbra

(This is one of the classes I’m most attached to, since it has gone through so many rewrites since 2011)

Umbra

Shadow knights, shadow assassins and shadowmancers, these are the titles given to the umbras. These deadly warriors mold the shadows around them to create deadly effects to accomplish their objective, whatever it may be. Whether it was a gift from a dark patron, or taint from the Plane of Shadow itself; they can sculpt the shadows around them to create weapons, creatures to serve them, and even flames composed of pure darkness.

It is not a rare sight to see an umbra in the employ of a thief’s guild, much less in an assassin’s guild. Commonly found as sell-swords as well, an umbra’s price is never too steep for the amazing work they can do. Infiltration, assassination and theft, are but some of the umbra’s specialties, usually leaving their victim’s confounded, without a trace of who or what, lurked in the shadows.

Role: Umbra’s prefer to size up their opponents, confounding them with their different abilities, always using their darkness ability to make sure they have shadows around them at all times.

Weapon and armor proficiencies: Umbras are proficient with all simple weapons, plus the hand crossbow, the rapier, the sword cane, the shortsword, the kukri, the starknife and the shortbow (and its composite version); they are proficient with light armor and bucklers.

Shadowcraft (Su): At 1st level, umbras gain a shadowcraft pool, which they use to power their abilities. Their shadowcraft pool equals the umbra’s class level + their Wis modifier. Abilities that use up shadowcraft pool are called shadowmancies, and the umbra learns various shadowmancies as he gains levels. Umbras regain all spent shadowcraft points at midnight.

Darkness (Sp): The umbra gains the spell darkness as a spell-like ability at level 1. Using darkness consumes 1 point from the umbra’s shadowcraft pool.

Darkvision (Su): At 1st level the Umbra gain the ability to see in darkness up to 30ft. At level six this darkvision extends to 60ft. At level eleven it extends to 120ft. Finally at 17th level, the Umbra gains the ability to see in darkness of any kind, even magical darkness.

Low-light Vision (Su): At 1st level, the umbra gains the ability to see twice as far as a human in any condition of dim light. He retains the ability to distinguish color and detail under these conditions.

Shadowstrike (Su): A creature’s shadow is tied to its life force; all umbras know this to be true, thus they can aim an attack at an opponent’s shadow to deal grievous wounds. To be able to use shadowstrike the umbra must, as a move action, focus on a creature’s shadow. The umbra remains focused on a creature’s shadow for one minute, until the creature is slain or until the umbra stops focusing on the creature’s shadow, requiring another move action. The umbra must see his opponent’s shadow clearly or be in an area of dim light or darker to use this ability.

Focusing on a creature’s shadow requires much of the umbra’s concentration. The umbra takes a -2 penalty to his Armor Class, except against attacks made by the target of his shadowstrike. In addition, the umbra takes a -2 penalty to all his perception rolls while focused on a creature’s shadow, and a -2 penalty on all attack rolls when attacking a creature he is not focused on.

When using shadowstrike, the umbra’s melee attacks deal an additional +1d4 points of damage, increasing by an additional +1d4 at 4th level and every three levels thereafter. This damage is not multiplied on a critical hit. The umbra can only focus on a single creature’s shadow at a time, if the umbra wishes to deal shadowstrike damage against another creature while still focusing on a creature’s shadow he must first dismiss his first shadowstrike and activate it again on the other creature. Creature’s that do not cast shadows and creatures immune to precision based damage are immune to the umbra’s shadowstrike.

Shadowmancy (Sp): The umbra may weave the shadows around him (sometimes even his own) to create diferent effects, in short, shadowmancies are spell-like abilities that the umbra learns as he levels up. At 1st level the umbra learns a shadowmancy chosen from the list below. Then, at 3rd level and every three levels thereafter, the umbra learns a new shadowmancy; he must meet any level prerequisite the shadowmancy may have. Each shadowmancy costs a different amount of shadowcraft points. If a shadowancy calls for a saving throw its save is always 10 + half the umbra’s class level + his Wisdom modifier. The caster level for any shadowmancy equals the umbra’s class level. The list of shadowmancies is as follow:

Deeper Darkness: The umbra gains deeper darkness as a spell-like ability. This ability consumes 2 points from the umbra’s shadowcraft pool.

This ability consumes 2 points from the umbra’s shadowcraft pool, plus 1 additional shadowcraft point for every clone above one the umbra creates (up to a maximum of one additional shadow clone for every 3 class levels the umbra possesses). The umbra must possess the shadow image shadowmancy to learn this shadowmancy.

Shadow Cloud: The umbra gains fog cloud as a spell-like ability. This ability consumes 2 points from the umbra’s shadowcraft pool. The umbra must possess the shadow mist shadowmancy to learn this shadowmancy.

Shadow Weapon: The umbra gains shadow weapon as a spell-like ability, with the exception that at 3rd level and three levels thereafter the weapons gains a +1 enhancement bonus (to a maximum of +5 at level 15th). This ability consumes 1 point from the umbra’s shadowcraft pool, plus 1 more for each enhancement bonus on the weapon, in addition, the umbra may grant the weapon the frost or keen weapon property using up an additional shadowcraft point (he may spend 2 shadowcraft points to grant the weapon both bonuses). The weapon must have at least a +1 enhancement bonus before granting it a weapon property.

Shadow Web: The umbra gains phantasmal web as a spell-like ability. This shadowmancy consumes 3 points from the umbra’s shadowcraft pool. The umbra must be at least level 9th and possess the shadow tentacles shadowmancy to learn this shadowmancy.

Shadowbolt (Sp): At 2nd level an Umbra learns how to concentrate the shadows around him and shoot them at his enemies. Attacking with shadowbolts requires a ranged touch attack that provokes attacks of opportunity. The shadowbolt has a range of 30ft.

Shadowbolt deals 1d4 points of damage, plus an additional 1d4 at level 5th level and every three levels thereafter. The caster level for shadowbolt is equal to the Umbra’s class level. Shadowbolt emulates a spell of a level equal to half the Umbra’s class level minus one. Activating this ability consumes one point from the umbra’s shadowcraft pool.

Shadowsunder (Su): At 7th level, the umbra gains the ability to deal greater damage against unaware creatures. To use shadowsunder an umbra must be in an area of dim light or darker and attack a flat-footed opponent he is focusing on with shadowstrike. Shadowsunder deals additional damage equal to half the umbra’s class level (this is in addition to the shadowstrike damage). At level 14th this damage increases to the umbra’s full class level.

In addition, on a successful shadowsunder the umbra steals part of the target’s shadow and adds it to his own, granting the umbra 1 shadowcraft point. This ability cannot increase the umbra’s shadowcraft pool over its maximum.

Hide in plain sight (Su): Closer to achieve his goal of becoming one with the shadows, at level 15th and onward an umbra can use the stealth skill in areas of darkness and dim light even while being observed.

Shadowbolt Strike (Sp): An umbra of level 17th learns to combine his shadowbolt and shadowstrike abilities. He must first be focusing on the creature’s shadow with shadowstrike, he then targets his opponent’s shadow with his shadowbolt, and if the attack is successful the Umbra deals the shadowbolt damage plus the shadowstrike damage.

Shadowrend (Su): At level 20th an umbra learns to sever his opponents shadow from his body, thus destroying both the shadow and the body in the process. When the umbra does a shadowsunder, he may try to destroy his opponent’s shadow, killing him instantly. The opponent must succeed at a Fortitude save equal to 10 + ½ the Umbra’s class level + the Umbra’s Wisdom modifier. Creatures that successfully save against this ability become immune to it for 24 hours. This is a death effect.
